Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Covering approximately 996 km², the park protects much of the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, often called the "Mountains of the Moon." It is renowned for its snow-capped peaks, glaciers, alpine vegetation, and world-class mountain trekking.

Although best known for its mountain scenery, the park is also home to: Forest elephants, Buffaloes, Bushbucks, Blue monkeys, Black-and-white colobus monkeys, Chimpanzees (occasionally seen in lower forests), Three-horned chameleons, Over 200 bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori turaco and handsome francolin.

Best Time to Visit

Mountain conditions are generally most favorable during the drier months: December to February, June to August. Weather in the Rwenzori is highly unpredictable, and rain can occur at any time of year, so proper trekking equipment is essential.

Getting There

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located near Kasese, approximately 370 km (6–7 hours by road) from Kampala. It is often combined with visits to nearby destinations such as Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale National Park, and Semuliki National Park.
